This website helps to explain the habitats and wildlife of the Alderbed Meadow. How the site was spared from agricultural improvement, about the folklore of some of the many wild plants, the lifestyles of the eight small mammal species recorded and the 43 different types of daddy-long-legs living here.

We rely on independent funding and currently do not receive support from local authorities or councils

What We Do
Raising Awareness
Building A Community
We are dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of the Alderbed & Woodland Project — a vital local effort to protect and enhance our natural woodland spaces. Our aim is to inspire the community to understand, appreciate, and support the conservation of these unique habitats that provide a home for diverse wildlife and a peaceful refuge for people.
By increasing awareness, we hope to build a stronger connection between the people of Charing and their local natural heritage. Every conversation, visit, and volunteer action helps ensure that these woodlands continue to thrive for future generations.
The Charing Alderbeds are more than conservation — it’s about community. We’re bringing together local people who care about the future of our natural spaces and want to play a part in protecting the Alderbed & Woodland area for everyone to enjoy.
Our mission is to build a strong, connected network of volunteers, neighbours, and partners who share a passion for the environment. By working together, we can ensure that the Alderbed & Woodland continue to thrive as living spaces for wildlife and welcoming places for the community.
By joining the Friends of the Alderbeds, you become part of a community that values connection, collaboration, and care for the natural world. Together, we can make a lasting difference — for the Alderbed, for the woodlands, and for the people who call Charing home.
